Experience Bermuda: Ledger's Open-Source Python Package for Working with Loss Triangles at CLRS 2025

Data Analytics Animation

Ledger is thrilled to announce it will be presenting Bermuda, its open-source Python package for storing, cleaning, and manipulating loss triangles at the Casualty Loss Reserve Seminar (CLRS)'s morning workshop September 8 in Philadelphia.

Ledger data scientists were frustrated by the inability of existing Python tools to handle the often extremely messy triangle data provided by various risk originators. Encountering everything from annoying general-purpose data frames for common actuarial operations on triangles on through ugly mixtures of quarterly and annual, accident-year and policy-year with four different currencies, the team knew there had to be a better way. Bermuda was created over four years ago to help address these issues, and it's been battle-tested and improved over the years since. The team is excited to have officially published Bermuda earlier this year as an open-source package.

Bermuda Answers the Call

Bermuda treats triangles as immutable data structures allowing users to manipulate through a rich set of chainable methods, meaning, the syntax is easy to pick up and chunks of code are easy to predict. It handles "normal-looking" triangles without issue and can contend with some of what the Data Science team stated as, "the ugliest, weirdest, most cobbled-together assumption-breaking-est triangles ever seen."

Since using Bermuda internally, Ledger has built a solid library of functions for manipulating and processing triangles and has created an extensive set of documentation and tutorials for new users to help them take advantage of Bermuda's capabilities quickly and easily.

Attend CLRS 2025 and Experience it Firsthand

The team is excited to continue sharing the tool with the industry and is excited to receive another opportunity to demonstrate Bermuda during the CLRS workshop. Attendees get to experience Bermuda in action firsthand, as well as an opportunity to learn how to transform loss triangle analysis by integrating Bermuda into their existing actuarial workflows. They'll also see a demo of additional tools the team has developed to help improve the workflows for Underwriters and the Actuarial Community.
